Seminars

The Keller Consulting Group offers seminars on a variety of subjects in policing.

"Preparing for and Surviving Politics":

I have a Bachelors Degree in Law Enforcement Administration, am a Graduate of the FBI National Academy 176th Session and a Graduate of the Leadership Command College from the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas and with almost 30 years in the policing profession, I can tell that with all this training, no one ever mentioned how influential, both positively and negatively, politics would have on my career.

Having surveyed many other police administrators I have found a real need for this type of training. I have been approached by the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas regarding possibly providing this seminar to the Police Chief’s here in Texas.

The seminar “Preparing for and Surviving Politics” has gathered considerable popularity and is not intended just for Texas. I want to provide this on a national scale as well. Whether you are from Texas or some other state, political influence is the same. The circumstances vary. To this end I would like to offer this opportunity to you.

In this seminar we discuss issues such as:

  • Maintaining your Ethics and Integrity.

  • Understanding political agenda’s

  • Working politics to your advantage.

  • Posturing

  • Whistleblower Protection Act

  • Proper Documentation

  • Surreptitious Recording

  • Political Preparation

  • Becoming an interim or full time City Manager/Administrator

  • Law Suits

  • Taking a stand

  • Putting your career on the line to do what is right.

  • And many other facets of political impact.

In an attempt to custom make the presentation applicable to your organization or area we like to look at or have access to:

  •     Newspaper articles relevant to any issues that have an impact on policing in your area.

  •     Any employee issues that are of significance.

  •     The political organization in your area. (Commissioners etc)

  •     State Whistleblower Protection (if any)

  •     State law on public corruption, official misconduct etc.

  •     Relevant political issues

  •     Any controversy or issues that you think need to be discussed

  •     Website address for local newspaper.

"Effective Leadership”:

The Keller Consulting Group provides Police Leadership training designed to teach the participant how to be an effective leader. Effective leadership in any organization is a fluid, dynamic, process that requires constant vigilance. An Effective leader must be cognizant of the pressures and influences that impact the performance of their employees. We review real issues in real organizations and utilize problem-solving skills in collaboration with your leaders, managers, and staff. We do not only suggest solutions, we work with you to solve the issues and problems confronting your organization.

Many professional police organizations have a Vision and Mission statement but few have been able to bridge theory into results. We utilize a process called PACC, which stands for Planning, Accountability, Communications and Control. This process, which deals with real issues for the leader in any organization, bridges the gap between what we would like to accomplish and how to accomplish those goals utilizing the resources available. The PACC process has been utilized in organizations all over the world, has been written up in the Harvard Business Review, and we now want to introduce it into the policing profession. It is a proven, real time process that is designed to save time, money, and the necessity of transferring theory into measurable results.

We are committed to helping organizations meet the leadership demands of the 21st Century by learning together what it takes to be effective. We will discuss many areas of leadership. The following are just a few:

  • What are the characteristics of an effective leader?

  • What role does “perception” play in effective leadership?

  • Do we set the example?

  • Are Ethics and Integrity really important?

  • Is the “Good Old Boy” system really dead?

  • Are we willing to go the distance for our employees?

  • Who’s to blame when things go wrong?

  • What do our employees really want from us?

  • P.O.L.I.C.E. Management Process

  • Leadership and Scrotes

“Policing 101 for Public Officials”:

All to often public officials, county commissioners, and city managers are called to task over the actions of their law enforcement agencies.

We provide a seminar that gives these officials a greater understanding of the policing profession. Our ultimate goal is that you, a public official, when called to task over the actions of your policing agency, will have a better understanding of what and why the police do the things they do. This new understanding will better prepare you to speak intelligently to your constituents and citizens. This new understanding will greatly assist you during budget preparation.

When your policing agency asks for something new you may already have a better understanding of the expense justification or that the request is unjustified. We want to help bridge the gap between city officials and the police, and promote a proactive team environment. To accomplish this we review issues such as:

  • The laws that can get you into trouble

  • Police Authority

  • Search and Seizure

  • Police Pursuits

  • Use of Force

  • Internal Affairs Investigations

  • Issuance of Citations (tickets)

  • Police Discretion

  • Media Relations

  • Police Selection Process

  • Ethics

  • Racial Profiling

  • Politics

  • Building Trust
